Sweet November Scarf/Shawl Free Crochet Pattern

Ok so a few days ago I was watching Sweet November and I couldn't stop wanting the scarf/shawl she was wearing. So I made my own :D Sorry about the bad pics it is really hard to take pics of yourself in the bathroom mirror, especially pics of your own back LOL. If you can't see all of the pics, right click on the picture and select view picture.

Here is a couple pics of what the scarf/shawl is supposed to look like

******UPDATE 11-20-09*****

Here is a pic to show an up close view of the stitches

I hope this helps clear up some confusion. (this is just the tip, not the whole thing)

Sweet November Scarf/Shawl
by: AprilDraven

for personal use only

J hook

Abbreviations:
Rnd: round
ch: chain
dc: double crochet

Yarn: I used a little over 6 oz of Caron Simply Soft 100% acrylic Worsted medium 4ply Autumn Red

ch 4, 1 dc in 1st ch, ch 3, turn (This forms beginning loop)

*****UPDATE 1-14-11*****
When I say loop what I mean is the space that is created. This pattern is worked in the space created not the stitches. Look at the picture above I have provided and you can see what I mean. You create a circle and then do the stitch in the circle. I really don't know how to explain it better.

1 dc in loop, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 3, turn

(1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)(in same loop) ch 1 (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)(in same loop) ch 3, turn

(1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)(in same loop) (ch 1, 1 dc)(in next loop) (ch 1, 1 dc)(in next loop)(1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)(in same loop) ch 3, turn

...continue pattern (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in end loops so you are increasing 2 stitches every row *you should end up with a big triangle*

I had a total of 44 rows when I was done. (I think the scarf she has was a little longer but I have the movie on VHS and can't take a screen shot so I had to improvise LOL VHS hehe)

Fringe: I wrapped the yarn around a DVD case. I tied 2 pieces held together in each loop on the sides.

*************Update*****************
Here is a white one I made with baby yarn :D

******A picture to help start the pattern******
Here is a picture that might help explain the beginning better.
sorry about the bad pic
ok in the first step:
it says ch 4, 1 dc in 1st ch, ch 3, turn (This forms beginning loop)
In the picture I did the chain in black and the dc in red
next step:
1 dc in loop, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 3, turn
I did the chain in purple (I forgot to flip it in the pic but still the chain is on the end
dc 1, chain 1, dc 1, ch 3, turn (you should have 3 loops total by this point)
next step:
(1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)(in same loop) ch 1 (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)(in same loop) ch 3, turn
what you will be doing from here on out is dc 2 in the end loops and 1 in all the loops in between. there will be one chain separating one stitch from the next.

  1. This is great! You know I had the same thought when I saw the movie and I never got around to making one, and wondered what type of yarn I'd have to use in order to avoid bulk. I think Simply Soft was a really good choice because even though it says worsted weight it actually works up much less bulky than about any other worsted acrylic yarn. Yours turned out terrific and looks just like the movie scarf.

  2. Thanks! I was also thinking about making a white one out of baby yarn. There isn't a big selection at Walmart.

  3. Have you thought of taking a photo of the screen? I occasionally do that during art programs, just for fun, and they do come out quite well. :)

  4. Great pattern! I've always loved that scard too, but never even had time to figure out how it was made. Thanks for posting the pattern, now I can finally have this scarf for myself! :)

Oh, and I <3 Simply Soft yarn. Great choice for this pattern.

  5. Love your blog. Thanks for the pattern!

You asked if someone could explain the yarn label information. Here is a basic rundown of the info you posted.

Acrylic is a manufactured fiber. Acrylic yarn is usually cheaper than natural fibers like wool, moth-proof, won't felt, and is generally hypo-allergenic.

Acrylic can be blended with natural fibers, Lion Brand Wool-Ease and Cotton-Ease, for example. (Cotton tends to be strong but cool. Wool tends to be warmer but not as durable.)

Worsted has two meanings. It can describe how the fiber was spun. Worsted yarns tend to be smooth with long fibers laying parallel to one another. (It's more technical than that, but I'm not a spinner.)

In the case of this label, though, it is more likely to indicate the weight or thickness of the yarn. Worsted medium is heavier and/or thicker than baby or sport weight, but lighter and thinner than bulky weight yarn.

4 ply means the number of strands that the yarn is made of. Baby weight tends to be 2 ply. Sport weight is generally 3 ply. And most of the time, worsted weight is 4 ply. Ply does not always indicate weight, however. Lion Brand Homespun is a single ply, bulky weight yarn, for example.

A great place for more info is http://www.yarnstandards.com/label.html.

I hope that helps. And thanks again for the pattern!

  6. Everyone:
Thanks! I hope you all enjoy it :D

    JacqBrisbane:
I used to do that a long time ago. I might try it again now that I have a digital camera :D Thanks.

    Uncommon Jen:
Thank you so much for explaining that. I was a little baffled when the soft yarn said the same thing as the regular yarn but they were completely different. Now I really want to try and make this with baby yarn and see how it turns out. Thank Again that really helps.

  24. Awesome blog, April. I just found it this week, desperate for modern and stylish free patterns to crochet for birthday and holiday presents; I'm laid off and have more time than money, for sure! Love that you have awesome patterns for men as well. I can't afford it now, but once I can, you'll be getting a donation! Looking forward to your next post!

    ReplyDelete
  28. April I am just about finished, can you tell me how long from point to last row is, I lost count of rows rofl.

    ReplyDelete
  29. UG April, I used an H hook :( will I need to make more rows :(?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Renee: I have no idea how long mine is across. It is in the wash right now. Just keep going until it wraps around your neck and feels comfortable :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Renee: Yah you will probably have to do a lot more rows if you used an H hook :( unless you crochet really loose.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ooof lol Ok.
Do you have a guess how long it was lol

    ReplyDelete
  33. Renee: I found the size in the Craftster post. Someone else asked me that question a while ago.
30 inches from peak to top and about 60 inches across

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great, Thanks, I am a member there also lol.
I will post a pic when I am finished , My DH picked a chocolate brown out for it :)

  42. Hi April, Hope ok, somone liked the hat I did and I gave her your Link to it :)

Have you been to crochetville yet?

    http://www.crochetville.org/forum/index.php

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love the scarf! I got the Autumn Red and used a K hook. At the end instead of dc 1c dc, I did dc 1c dc 1c dc. That way the scarf was long enough at 26 rows instead of 44. Took about 5 hours. Love it! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Renee: Thanks for the link. I have never heard of crochetville

Caroline: good idea if you want to wear it as just a scarf ;) I might make one like that for my daughter.(she is 5 and wouldn't wear it as a shawl LOL) I wanted to make it so you can wear it as a shawl too because she does that in the movie. I love stuff that has more than one function :) Kudos on figuring out a quicker way :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. April, your welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm on scarf/shawl number 4 this week! They are great Christmas gifts. Thanks again for the pattern! With the added dc at the ends they are still deep enough to wear as shawl but they only touch to the waist. So they will be good scarves for the winter and light weight shawls for the spring or fall.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Caroline: sounds perfect for spring :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi, I was wondering, when you used the baby yarn for did you use the same size hook as the red one? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yep same hook. Sorry it took so long to respond. I didn't get an update like I usually do.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is a great pattern! Thanks so much. I've already made 2 for Christmas presents, and I'm now finally getting round to doing one for myself.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks April, this pattern is coming out beautiful! I'm using Caron's rainbow tones yarn with a K hook and am at 46 rows, but still not 60" across and 30" (at about 26") from tip to top. It's looking giant so was wondering if I need to adjust the measurements for the larger hook.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Susan: Sorry, your message was in my spam folder and I didn't get it until now :( I would need to see a pic of what you have to know what to tell you. It should be even larger than mine if you used a bigger hook so I think there is something else going on.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Martha: Thanks :) I'm glad you enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. "I hope this helps clear up some confusion. (this is just the tip, not the whole thing)"

Teehee, that's what he said. :P

I just started making this scarf in a beautiful yarn I've been saving for just the right project- Interlacements Oregon Worsted II in a colorway that looks exactly like Van Gogh's "Starry Starry Night."

    ReplyDelete
  55. I hope you don't mind but this is such an amazing scarf and pattern that I linked this in my blog: http://patriciasparticularity.blogspot.com/ .
Great work!! I've already made one and I love it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. The blue looks really pretty BTW :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. So which do you prefer between the white and red ones? I like how thin/delicate the white one looks. Did you still use a J hook for that one?

I've been hunting around Ravelry and I keep coming to your patterns, so I figured I might as well say hi! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think I used the J hook on the white one too. I like the red one best. It isn't as hot lol

    ReplyDelete
  59. The way you tied the fringe on the shawl is not the traditional way... Can you be more specific on how you tied the two strands onto the shawl?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sinanthiel:take two long pieces, hold them together, pull through the loop, fold in half around the loop, you should have 4 strands in your hand, holding two in each hand tie a knot

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi April.. Great scarf but I'm trying to make it and having a problem.. I can't figure out on step two where the second 1 dc gets chained into??

    This is what you wrote..
"1 dc in loop, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 3, turn"

I hope that makes sense.. lol
    Laurie

    ReplyDelete
  62. When the loops are formed inbetween the stitches instead of in the stitches. I hope this makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  63. hello April...just had to post that love some of the items you have on here. I learned to crochet when I was young and have just started the learn the joys of it again.

you had posted not knowing yarns too well this is a link that might help explain things a little better, http://www.sewingitall.com/knitting-yarn.html

also spend a little time in your LYS with a knowledgeable sales rep that can explain if you are hands on.

Thank you so much. Keep up the great work.

Now I'm going to make one for my friend but I need some suggestion and pointers. I'm wondering would it be possible to make it with 2 colors: navy blue/white or navy blue/black. If so, which do you think would make a better matching color for this pattern. Thanks April :D

  65. This is a lovely scarf, and a wonderful lesson. I recently made a crocheted baktus style scarf and just left it plain. Seeing your lovely fringe made me realize that my scarf was done, but it wasn't finished. Thanks for the lesson in the importance of details.

  67. Hi April!
I absolutely love this shawl and I am dying to crochet it. I am having difficulty understanding the instructions for the pattern. I am a beginner when it comes to crocheting so a little extra explaining is unfortunately necessary. In the second step you put "1 dc in loop, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 3, turn". I am having a hard time figuring out where the 2nd dc goes. Does it go in the same loop as the first? Or in a chain? Please help. Thanks!

  69. I saw this scarf on ravelry and I couldn't believe it! Years ago when I saw that movie all I could concentrate on was that scarf. I barely remember anything about the plot, but I remembered that scarf! When I saw the name of the pattern I knew exactly what it was! I thought it was so cool! I was just beginning to crochet when I first saw Sweet November and I didn't have the skillz to just look at a pattern and figure out how to work it. And I never could make myself watch the movie again to try and figure it out now. But I always wished I could make that scarf and now I can! So THANK YOU, THANK YOU for creating the pattern!!

  74. Great pattern. I just came across your blog today through the Hooked on Crochet e-mail and thought it was beautiful.

I noticed that several people asked about the word loop in the comments and you did a great job of explaining it. I am finishing up a shawl from a Lion Brand pattern that also works the stitches into the space created in the previous row and they used the term chain space and explained it as ch-space = space previously made. Your explanation was a bit clearer, but if people are used to seeing the Lion Brad abbreviation, they msy grasp the meaning quicker.

Can't wait to tackle some of your other patterns.

  80. Just a note to say thanks for the free pattern… I like to do that when I come across such things from a real person. Of course a part of me knows every pattern has a creator, but names and contact info aren’t always at hand. In the interest of truth I suppose I should say I am rather compelled to send these notes, my Dear Old Sainted Mother was rather a stickler for thank you notes, and promised me a good old fashion haunting should I fail. I’m inclined to believe her, to my knowledge she only lied to me once, and that at about the age of three; she told me, strait faced, the fried green tomatoes she set before me was meat with seeds. I didn’t fall for the ploy; I was three, not stupid. John

  90. I can't get it to become a descent triangle.. D: what am I doing wrong?

  93. I am trying to make one and I am confused , still kinda new to this so hopefully not a dumb question. when you chain 3 and turn is that your first double crochet ? some patterns say the chain 3 counts as a double crochet and I was going by that because I didn't know and I have a decent triangle going but it still seems kinda small at row 30 compared to yours... am I doing it wrong?

  98. Hi April,

Thanks so much for sharing. I've always loved the scarves/shawls that Charlize wore in the film and searched for a pattern. I've came close to knitting one similar for Christmas gifts, however, this crochet pattern is so much more easier and faster that it will be shawls for all my gals this year for Christmas and birthdays . I'm more of intermediate knitter, and a novice at crochet. I found your pattern a tad confusing at first to read, however, after a few attempts it all became clear. The pattern is a different take on a granny square. I've finished 3 of these shawls already, however, i'm looking for the drape that Charlize's had in the film. I've tried 3 different types of yarns and experimented with different sizes of hooks, I guess maybe 4th times a charm...

If you have any advice on the yarn I should use to be able to get the drape described would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much once again for posting this very easy pattern, as well as a all of your other lovely crafty patterns.

btw, do you have a youtube blog as well?

    Cheers,

  103. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I end up with more stitches when I start a new row than I when I finish the row. It's probably so simple, but I can't see it to save my life. Please help!

  104. I finished adding the fringe to this just this morning, having made the 'body' of it yesterday. It went right out the door with my daughter. She loved it, Thank You :)

  107. I am sorry, but I still can't visualize the beginning. Where are the diagram and color-coded scarf you refer to?

  108. I had a hard time figuring out the beginning. I was dead determined though. I just kept playing with it, reading her instruction again and boom!!!! The rest is so easy. I love this pattern. I am pretty new at crocheting also, but it is so worth it.

  110. I am real tickled to see this pattern. The photo showing it laid out flat reminds me of a shawl that my mother crocheted. I am now learning to crochet and had wanted to make some more of that shawl (other colors) but am not sure where her pattern is (of course, she also misplaced it several years ago and I haven't yet found it while cleaning out her house). I am looking forward to trying this out and holding it up against my mother's shawl to see if I can tell if it is the same. Of course mine is a shawl and could not be used as a scarf. Thanks so much for the pattern and I really am looking forward to trying it out.

  111. Thank you, finally I found the pattern of this shawl. I was searching for such a long time. I will crochet it for the birthday of my sister in April. She loves the film and always wanted this shawl.

  114. I counted the ch3 as (1dc, ch1)

    Row 1: ch4, 1dc in 1st ch, ch3, turn
    Row 2: (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in ch-sp, ch3,
    turn
    Row 3: (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in 1st ch-sp;
    (ch1, 1dc) each ch-sp to end;
    ch1, (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in last sp;
    ch3, turn

Rep row 3 until desired length.
Each row inc. by 2 dc's. Each row will have an odd count of dcs, including the beginning ch3 as 1 dc.

  115. While the blog post might be a bit older, the timeless appeal of this pattern still holds strong. I've always been a fan of crafting and DIY projects, and this scarf/shawl is simply perfect for the upcoming fall season.
